Focus fugal counterpoint: voice independence and entries
What its lesson teaches
Study the four-voice Fugue in C major from Book 1 of Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier, BWV 846. Its subject enters once in each voice in the opening bars, then returns in overlapping entries later on: mark every entry, and the voice that carries it, before you play. The three-voice Fugue in C minor, BWV 847, is the alternative. At the keyboard: play an entry and sing its answer.
