What its lesson teaches

7.7 Connect four-note chords

Study the first movement of Beethoven’s Sonata in G minor, Op. 49 No. 1. First reduce its left-hand harmony to block chords, changing chords wherever the harmony changes, then play the written accompaniment and hear how its dominant sevenths, four-note chords, lead to the next harmony by small steps. At the keyboard: connect four-note chords with small movements.

Technique
  • G harmonic minor scale, hands together, 2 octaves
  • D major cadence in four-note chords (I–IV–V7–I), hands together
