What its lesson teaches

L.13 Keep double sixths light at speed

Study the right-hand sixths in bars 1–2 of Chopin’s Étude in D-flat major, Op. 25 No. 8. Practise each line slowly with the fingering you will use, then restore the pairs with the upper line leading. Keep a quiet, close hand and let the arm carry changes of position; retain the complete slurred gestures and build towards the printed Vivace. The C-major sixths warm-up is a separate preparation. This assigned excerpt develops double-note control; it does not certify a whole performance.

Technique
  • C major scale in sixths, hands together, 2 octaves (faster: Licentiate tempo)
  • D-flat major scale, hands together, 4 octaves
