What its lesson teaches
Play Raindrops and Ribbons, an original piece in the C five-finger position. Make its staccato notes short and light and its slurred notes smooth, and give the three accented notes (bars 1, 3 and 6) a little more weight without striking harder. Köhler’s Op. 190 No. 4, the alternative, prints no articulation: play it once detached and once connected. Then compare detached and connected versions of the same phrase at the keyboard.
