Focus Walk octaves in the left hand while the right hand answers with the blues scale's flat third, flat fifth and flat seventh.
What its lesson teaches
Study Octave Walk Shuffle, an original 12/8 shuffle study in G whose left hand walks in octaves. Its right hand uses the G blues scale: B flat, the blue third, crushed onto B (bar 1); C sharp, the flattened fifth (bar 2); and F, the flattened seventh, over that walking bass. Then compare that colour with pentatonic and whole-tone scales. At the keyboard: compare pentatonic, whole-tone and blues scales.
Technique G major scale, hands together, 2 octaves, staccato
